Crowdfunding in Hungary: What is the Best Fundraising Platform

Crowdfunding has become one of the most popular forms of fundraising across Europe, and this trend is now also reaching Hungary. Every year, thousands of Hungarians support charities and individuals in need – but for a long time, there has been limited access to crowdfunding platforms. Is it now possible to start your own fundraising campaign for any cause in Hungary?

Online Fundraising in Hungary

Over the past decade, Hungary has witnessed a consistent rise in public engagement in charitable and community initiatives. The non-profit sector is active and diverse, comprising around 53,000 registered NGOs and over 350,000 volunteers supporting various initiatives. Most organisations rely on private donations as a key source of income. According to research by the NIOK Foundation (2022), almost 87% of NGOs receive individual donations, and willingness to give has grown steadily in recent years.

For many years, however, crowdfunding options were limited. Local donation-based platforms mainly focused on NGOs, and individuals had few opportunities to raise funds online. This situation began to change as new digital tools and payment systems became available. In 2023, 4fund.com – a fundraising platform created by the Polish crowdfunding experts behind Zrzutka.pl – entered the European market. This made it possible for non-profit organisations and private users in Hungary to safely and transparently create fundraisers for any cause!

Crowdfunding Platforms in Hungary

Hungary has a limited selection of crowdfunding platforms. Most of these platforms serve specific types of campaigns and audiences. Here’s an overview of the main options currently available.

Adjukössze

Run by the NIOK Foundation, Adjukössze is one of the largest donation-based platforms for Hungarian NGOs. It allows organisations to accept card payments as well as receive donations via SMS. The platform is particularly popular among organisations based in Budapest, which account for over 60% of campaigns and 75% of all donations.

According to Adjukössze data, the most popular areas for fundraising include social support (36%), education (19%), culture (10%), and health (9%). Adjukössze enjoys a strong position in Hungary’s NGO fundraising market, serving a large number of active organisations. Many campaigns now use social media outreach to reach wider audiences, and around 55% of donations are set up as recurring contributions – highlighting the growing trend of long-term support.

4fund.com

Launched in 2023 by Zrzutka.pl, Poland’s largest fundraising platform, 4fund.com entered the European market as a licensed payment service provider. The platform does not charge any fees for creating, donating to, or withdrawing from fundraisers. It is primarily supported through voluntary donations.

On 4fund.com you can:

  • Create a fundraiser for any cause
  • Set up recurring donations
  • Raise money on behalf of an organisation
  • Create donation boxes to support someone else’s cause
  • Add offers and auctions
  • Add support tiers
  • Generate posters and QR codes for promotion
  • Receive donations in forints that are automatically converted to euros
  • Reach an international audience thanks to automatic translation
  • and more!

Thanks to its many advanced features, 4fund.com allows organisers to fully customise their campaigns. For instance, you can create a reward-based crowdfunding campaign by adding offers, set up a membership page using support tiers, and use donation boxes for peer-to-peer fundraising.

In Hungary alone, over €800,000 (approximately 300,000,000 HUF) has been raised through 4fund.com in just two years. Many campaigns have been highly successful, supporting medical treatments, rehabilitation, and even personal dreams. Notably, the Dora Vita campaign raised over €56,000 (approximately 21 million HUF) for brain tumour treatment in just 15 hours. This wasn’t the only Hungarian crowdfunding campaign for this kind of treatment!

Tőkeportál

Tőkeportál is the first Hungarian equity crowdfunding platform, having successfully run several investment campaigns. Originally founded in Budapest, it relocated to Malta to expand internationally and operate under the European Crowdfunding Service Provider Regulation (ECSPR), supervised by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA).

TOKE is available in both Hungarian and English. Unlike donation-based platforms, it focuses on equity crowdfunding, where investors fund startups or businesses in exchange for shares. It does not support personal or charity fundraising, making it exclusively suited for investors and business projects.

Brancs

Designed for reward-based crowdfunding, Brancs is a local Hungarian platform that allows users to pre-order products and services. It is primarily used by creators, small businesses, and communities to fund product launches and collaborative purchases. Fees charged by the platform depend on the type of campaign and range from 9.9% to 19.9%.

Brancs is not intended for personal or charitable fundraising. Operating on a reward system, supporters receive products, perks, or special editions in return for their contributions. The platform is available in Hungarian and tailored for local audiences, making it a popular choice for smaller, community-driven projects.

GoFundMe

GoFundMe is a global crowdfunding platform mainly used for personal and charitable fundraising. While it is widely known for individual campaigns, it is not available in Hungary, as payouts are limited to 20 supported countries. However, the platform remains well recognised among Hungarian users, who can still support international fundraisers.

Kickstarter

Kickstarter is a popular reward-based crowdfunding platform designed for creative and product-focused projects. It allows creators to launch campaigns and offer rewards to backers who support their ideas. Although it is accessible to European users with an IBAN account in euros, it is not fully available for campaign creation from Hungary and does not support personal or charitable fundraising.

Why Crowdfunding Is Growing in Hungary

In recent years, Hungary has witnessed a notable change in how people support social, medical, and community initiatives. Private giving has become more common, and digital tools have made donating easier than ever before. According to research by NIOK and GPEI, more than one-third of Hungarians supported a non-profit organisation in the past year, and the number of regular donors continues to increase.

Several factors are driving this change:

  • Secure online systems make donating fast and convenient for both individuals and organisations.
  • Thanks to social media, fundraising organisers can quickly gain attention and mobilise communities to respond to urgent needs or personal stories.
  • Creators are embracing the membership model. Similar to trends across Europe, an increasing number of Hungarian artists, podcasters, and content creators are turning to crowdfunding and subscription-based support.

Crowdfunding also fits well into the growing culture of small, regular donations. Platforms such as 4fund.com support these trends by offering tools for recurring fundraising, donation boxes, and transparent online campaigns – making it easier for individuals, organisations, and creators in Hungary to build ongoing support and engage their communities.
