Buba is our sweet pet with a beard, a large comfort zone, and a disproportionate amount of personality for such a small body. Needless to say, everyone who met her couldn’t help but fall in love. Because she’s a stubborn, feisty little rascal. Curious, yet shy. She might be almost 14 years old, but she bounces and pounces like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. She has an infinite amount of energy and a strong character.

We cannot have our own children, so Buba is not only our pet friend and companion but our family. And we are her pack – each of us has a place and a role. Everyone performs important tasks to benefit this strange group of bullheaded individuals, each set in their own ways. Buba’s role is to guard us from every shadow on our evening walks. And ours is to protect her from every leaf gusting in the autumn’s wind. A perfect arrangement.

But we’ve failed to protect her from this particular monster: cancer. Melanoma. Extremely malignant. Dr. Jagielski presented several options; the best one included paw amputation and the Oncept vaccines. Fear, pain, and disappointment – that’s all we felt. But we will not give up. Neither of us will give up. We don’t know whether this is something we say to convince Buba or ourselves, but we know we must give it our all, just as she has given to us all her life.

Unfortunately, treatment costs are enormous, and they’ve started to overwhelm us. The Oncept vaccine gives Buba the best chance for a longer and better life, but one comes down to around 15 thousand PLN, and we must repeat it every six months.
