Description
I have diffuse non-Hodgkin 's lymphoma - a cancer of the lymphatic system, coded C83.0. The disease has involved the lymph nodes, liver and bone marrow.
The diagnostic process took more than two years - from May 2022 to May 2024. During this time, many tests were performed, including four surgical biopsies, which did not lead to a clear diagnosis. Only the fifth surgical biopsy made it possible to obtain valuable histopathological material and diagnose the disease. Unfortunately, such a long wait certainly had a negative impact on the development of the disease and my current state of health.
A process of self-destruction is taking place in the body - more organs are being damaged, especially the liver and kidneys. I have profound anaemia, severe bone pain, headaches, I have also been diagnosed with epilepsy and an MRI scan of my head has shown worrying changes of an unclear nature. It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to move around. My condition worsens week by week.
The situation is further complicated by my medical history - since the age of 10 I have suffered from juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA, HLA-B27+), treated with, among other biologics, etanercept (Enbrel). Doctors suspect that the current disorder may be related to the former therapy.
I am currently under the care of many specialist clinics: haematology, neurology, immunology, genetics, nephrology and hepatology. Unfortunately, I have a lot of tests done for a fee because time is of the essence. Only two tests were performed at the genetic clinic - far too few to understand why my body is reacting so aggressively.
I cannot start systemic treatment (such as chemotherapy) until we know the cause of such a rapid deterioration. Doctors are considering qualifying me for a research project, but full genetic testing - WES and NGS panels - is required, the cost of which exceeds £10,000 and is not reimbursable.
Despite all the difficulties, I try to work as much as possible because I love what I do. But today, in all humility, I am asking for help.
Every zloty brings me closer to the diagnosis - and the diagnosis may be the only chance for successful treatment.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Dominika
