Description

Biochar - currently the only scalable method for CO₂ removal - needs your support!

To publicise biochar as a climate protection solution, we need more than scientific studies and specialist articles. We need stories that move and inspire people.

This is exactly where the documentary film The Biochar Effect by Mathew Schmid and Leila Conners comes in. It shows how versatile and effective biochar is in practice - from soil improvement and building materials to long-term CO₂ storage.

We are looking for your support: filming has already been completed. TheLegion 44team still needs 250,000 US dollarsfor post-production so that the film can be completed by Q1/2026.

With your support, we want to raise €10,000 together. This will make German Biochar e.V. visible as a supporter in the film credits - a strong sign that Germany is committed to scalable solutions for CO₂ extraction. With around 250 members, this equates to just €40 per member.

About the film

The Biochar Effect is not an image film, but a documentary journey that sheds light on larger social and cultural issues.

The film shows how problematic waste materials - from rice husks to sewage sludge to wood residues - are transformed into a permanently stable material through pyrolysis. This material improves soils, strengthens concrete, serves as a raw material for 3D printing, acts as a biodegradable mulch film and stores CO₂ for centuries.

The narrative combines personal stories of farmers, engineers and scientists with the larger question: How do we create a truly sustainable approach to carbon and the circular economy?

Publication & distribution:

  • Planned publication date: Spring 2026 (depending on funding)
  • Distribution: analogue to Legion 44 via Tree+, international festivals, TV and streaming partners

The same production company released the film Legion 44 in 2024.
