Help Blanka get better

We never thought we’d have to ask for help, but our family has now found itself in a situation that will be very difficult for us to get through on our own.

My wife, Blanka, has been diagnosed with genetic breast cancer. Due to the disease, she needs a bilateral mastectomy, which means the removal of both breasts. After the operation, the histological results will determine whether further radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or any other treatment will be required. A reconstructive operation will follow approximately one year after the first operation. 

The date of the first operation is 22 July 2026.

Due to the genetic defect, further organ-removal operations may also be required over the next year.

Blanka’s tumour is of an aggressive type, so every week lost counts for us. Based on the opinions of several specialist oncologists, a bilateral mastectomy is the recommended course of action. Although a tumour has currently only been found in one breast, her genetic background means there is a high risk of the disease developing on the other side as well. We do not want to wait until this happens.

Under the current public healthcare system, only the affected breast would be removed; therefore – in consultation with our doctors – we are choosing the course of action we consider safest, even if this entails a very significant financial burden. We were therefore forced to opt for private healthcare.

Our own experience has also reminded us just how important a thorough examination carried out at the right time can be. Blanka wasn’t satisfied with the standard screening test alone, but also had an extended examination carried out. It was thanks to this that the disease was detected. It’s hard to imagine what might have happened if it hadn’t been detected back then.

However frightening it may be, breast cancer now affects one in eight women. Go for a screening test or encourage your loved ones to do so. Early detection can save lives!

We’re doing everything we can to get through this period, but the treatments, operations, tests and loss of income together represent an unexpected financial burden of more than 10 million forints for our family.

Help Blanka on Her Journey to Recovery

My wife, Blanka, has been diagnosed with hereditary breast cancer caused by a genetic mutation. Because of this, she needs to undergo a bilateral mastectomy, meaning both breasts must be removed.

Following the operation, the pathology results will determine whether she will require further treatment, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or another form of treatment. Around one year after the first operation, she will also need reconstructive surgery.

Blanka’s first operation is scheduled for 22 July 2026.

Due to the genetic mutation, it is also possible that she will require further preventive organ-removal operations within the next year.

After discussing every option with our doctors, we decided to choose what we believe is the safest course of action for Blanka, even though it places an enormous financial burden on our family. This is why we have had to turn to private healthcare.

Our own experience has also shown us just how important thorough and timely screening can be. Blanka chose to undergo an extended screening examination rather than relying solely on the standard one. It was this decision that led to the cancer being discovered. It is difficult to imagine what might have happened if it had gone undetected.

As frightening as it is, breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women during their lifetime. Please take the time to attend regular screenings – or encourage the women you love to do so. Early detection truly saves lives.

We are doing everything we can to get through this, but the cost of examinations, operations, treatments, medication and the loss of income together represent an unexpected financial burden of more than €30,000 for our family.
