I live in a small room in a house, a quiet little space where life moves slowly and every day asks for strength. I am 54 years old, retired due to illness, living on a very small income. My body is often weak, but I am not alone. I have my little dog, Patroclita — my companion, my comfort, my reason to keep going when things feel too heavy. Patroclita is my daily joy, my shadow, the warm presence beside me in difficult nights. About a week ago, my world was shaken. A security guard made a cruel “joke” and sprayed her in the eyes with pepper spray. Watching her suffer broke my heart. I felt helpless, shocked, and deeply saddened — not only by her pain, but by the way some people see animals, as if they were nothing, as if they did not feel fear or pain. With the little money I had, I bought her treatment. I cleaned her eyes with trembling hands and stayed close to her day and night. She began to heal, slowly. I, however, was left with a deep realization. That shock turned into determination. I understood that I may not be able to change the whole world, but I can start something. I want to begin an educational campaign about animals — to speak about compassion, respect, and responsibility. I want to help care for stray animals, to offer them food, safety, and a gentle touch. And I want to encourage people to adopt them, or at least to offer them companionship and kindness. Patroclita and I move forward together, step by step. From my small room, from a life marked by illness and hardship, I still believe change is possible. Because kindness does not depend on money or health, but on the choice to look at a vulnerable being and say: you are not alone. Thank you, Lidia Lazar
