My name is Andrzej,

I am a doctor and a pathologist, a former academic and lecturer at the Medical University of Silesia, where I served as Vice-Dean for Research for four years and headed the Department of Pathology for over ten years. I have supervised numerous PhD theses and acted as a reviewer for doctoral and postdoctoral theses as well as scientific articles.

Until recently, I diagnosed thousands of patients, confirming or ruling out a cancer diagnosis. A pathologist takes full responsibility for what are sometimes very difficult decisions and for formulating diagnoses of malignant tumours, including cancer. This is very difficult for us doctors due to the heavy psychological burden, especially when we diagnose malignant tumours in young patients.The diagnoses made by pathologists are the most important and final in the diagnostic process. Other doctors – surgeons, radiotherapists and chemotherapy specialists – undertake therapeutic measures based on the pathological diagnosis, which analyses tissue or cytological material. It is we, the pathologists, who identify many prognostic and predictive factors in cancer, which informs the choice of individualised treatment for each patient. Unfortunately, there are very few of us (around 300), whilst the number of cancer cases continues to rise.

In 2022, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer; I underwent radical surgery and managed to overcome the disease. I was able to return to work and my family and continue to help many patients by diagnosing their tissue and cytological samples taken from cancerous tumours, whilst also giving lectures to trainee doctors as part of their specialist training in, amongst other things, oncology and surgical oncology. Unfortunately, in May 2024, the cancer returned; I was diagnosed with a second malignant tumour, colorectal cancer, at the advanced, final stage IV of the disease. The bowel tumour was successfully removed surgically, but unfortunately, metastatic lesions remained in the liver. After the operation, I had a stroke of bad luck (this often happens to healthcare workers). As a result of the sutures coming apart, a serious complication arose: peritonitis. After two months, I gradually returned to physical activity; I was unable to work and did not qualify for treatment, i.e. chemotherapy. Faced with this situation, I found a lifeline in the form of a dendritic cell autovaccine. The therapy was carried out in Germany, and I obtained healthy dendritic cells which were administered to me to boost the activity and sensitise other immune cells to cancer. I covered the cost of this therapy from my own funds and from a loan I received from friends and the Regional Medical Council. This therapy is not reimbursed by the National Health Fund. I returned to work in October 2024. The disease was halted thanks to the vaccine. In January 2025, the disease progressed, leading to the start of chemotherapy. This is still ongoing. I dream of a time when I can extend my professional career.I want to continue helping cancer patients by conducting diagnostics and continuing my work in the field of education regarding prevention and raising awareness of the factors and biology of cancer, including through lectures. This will reinforce the effect already achieved, namely stabilising and halting the cancer.I want to continue helping patients battling cancer and, as a scientist, to seek out new methods of treating cancer.
