Atcerēsimies Baltijas Universitāti! / Let's Remember the Baltic University!

Vai zinājāt, ka drīz pēc Otrā pasaules kara beigām, 1946. gada pavasarī, kara izpostītajā Hamburgā, Vācijā, trimdā devušies Latvijas Universitātes mācībspēki, kopā ar igauņiem un lietuviešiem, nodibināja augstskolu – Baltijas Universitāti? Otrajam Pasaules karam beidzoties, neskaitāmās bēgļu nometnēs Vācijā atradās jauni vīrieši un sievietes no Baltijas valstīm, kuri savulaik bija iesaukti Vācijas karadarbībā un kuru izglītība bija pārtraukta. Baltijas Universitātes mērķis bija šiem jauniešiem dot iespēju turpināt izglītību, tādējādi, arī cerību uz labāku nākotni.

Līdzekļu vākšanas akcija atbalstīs izstādi par šo vienreizējo fenomenu. Universitāte, kuru vēlāk pārcēla no Hamburgas uz netālo Pinnebergu, darbojās trīsarpus gadus - līdz 1949. gada septembrim. Tai bija 8 fakultātes un tās pastāvēšanas laikā to apmeklēja vairāk nekā 2000 studentu no trijām Baltijas valstīm.Universitāte darbojās UNRRA (Apvienoto Nāciju Organizācijas Palīdzības un rehabilitācijas administrācijas) un Britu zonas Militārās valdības paspārnē.

Izstāde notiks Latvijas Nacionālajā bibliotēkā Rīgā, Latvijā. To atklās 2026. gada 15. aprīlī, un tā būs atvērta līdz šā.gada 31.augustam.

Izstādes iniciators ir Guntis Bērziņš, bijušais telekomunikāciju inženieris un studentu korporācija Fraternitas Cursica pārstāvis, kura vecāki darbojās universitāte kā mācībspēki. Izstādi rīko studentu korporācija Fraternitas Cursica sadarbībā ar Latvijas Nacionālās bibliotēkas Atbalsta biedrību, un tā notiks Latvijas Nacionālajā bibliotēkā. Izstādes rīcības grupā darbojas arī Latvijas Nacionālās bibliotēkas Atbalsta biedrības direktore Kārina Pētersone, māksliniece un scenogrāfe Kristīne Jurjāne, un izstādes kurators ir vēsturnieks Alvils Zauers, Par izstādi atbildīgā organizācija, latviešu Studentu korporācija Fraternitas Cursica, ir dibināta 1947. gadā Baltijas Universitātē, un to atbalsta četras citas Baltijas Universitātē dibinātas latviešu studentu un studenšu korporācijas - Spidola, Zinta, Fraternitas Imantica un Gersicania - kā arī privāti ziedotāji.

Let's Remember the Baltic University!

Did you know that soon after the end of World War II, in the spring of 1946, in war-torn Hamburg, Germany, exiled faculty members of the University of Latvia, together with Estonians and Lithuanians, founded a higher education institution – the Baltic University? At the end of World War II, numerous refugee camps in Germany housed young men and women from the Baltic States who had been drafted into the German war effort and whose education had been interrupted. The goal of the Baltic University was to give these young people the opportunity to continue their education, and thus also the hope for a better future.

The fundraising campaign will support an exhibition about this unique phenomenon. The university, which was later moved from Hamburg to nearby Pinneberg, operated for three and a half years until September 1949. It had 8 faculties and over 2,000 students from the three Baltic states attended it during its existence. The university operated under the auspices of UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) and the British Zone Military Government.

The exhibition will be held at the National Library of Latvia in Riga, Latvia. It will open on the 15th April 2026, and will remain open until the 31st August of this year.

The initiator of the exhibition is Guntis Bērziņš, a former telecommunications engineer and representative of the student fraternity Fraternitas Cursica, whose parents worked as faculty members at the university. The exhibition is organized by the student fraternity Fraternitas Cursica in cooperation with the Latvian National Library Support Society, and it will be held in the Latvian National Library. The exhibition's executive committee also includes Kārina Pētersone, director of the Latvian National Library Support Society, artist and scenographer Kristīne Jurjāne, and the curator of the exhibition is historian Alvils Zauers. The organization responsible for the exhibition, the Latvian Student fraternity Fraternitas Cursica, was founded in 1947 at the Baltic University, and is supported by four other Latvian student fraternities founded at the Baltic University - Spidola, Zinta, Fraternitas Imantica and Gersicania - as well as private donors.
