The Project: A Kindergarten for the Children, a Trap for Me In 2019, I won a public procurement to build a kindergarten in a disadvantaged region, fully funded by the European Union. From the very beginning, the government drastically underestimated the budget. The state made me wait 18 months for a budget adjustment and additional funding. Meanwhile, construction material prices skyrocketed due to the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The contract was a strict trap—I could not walk away without severe penalties.

To save the project and ensure the children got their kindergarten, I made a fateful decision: I took out a personal loan of 60,000,000 HUF (~€167,000). State officials looked me in the eye and promised that the extra EU funding was on the way and I would get my money back.

The Betrayal: Stealing the EU Funds I worked relentlessly and reached 75% completion. This was the magic number—at this point, the Hungarian state was legally able to draw down the European Union funds. In other words: my private money saved the EU funds for them.

My reward? Immediate termination of the contract. Almost immediately afterward, the state magically provided the extra financial resources they had denied me. The remaining 25% of the project—along with a massively inflated budget—was handed over to a "friendly" contractor tied to the ruling political elite.

The Devastating Cost They got the EU money and the profit. I was left with the €167,000 debt.

• My marriage collapsed; during the divorce, I left all my personal assets to my children and my ex-wife.
