Mia had everything... or almost everything.

She ran a small café in the countryside and was a proud mother, but she could no longer bear to live in an abusive relationship, and when she finally plucked up the courage, she divorced him five years ago.

Fifteen years of physical and emotional abuse weren’t enough; when it turned out her husband had cancer, she stayed by his side for another three years until he recovered.

She thought things could only get better from then on. She didn’t mind being left alone with her teenage daughter, a mortgage, and a business to run during the pandemic; she fought on undeterred, but to no avail! The divorce took away the little café where, over the years, she had built a real community; she organised fundraisers to neuter the stray cats she fed, gave food to those in need, organised exhibitions for local artists, and organised a Christmas market during the pandemic to cheer up the local community...

She felt that everything she had built so enthusiastically was gone. She tried to keep moving, immediately finding work, but her savings were soon used up.

Today, five years on, even with two jobs, Mia is working just to survive; not only is she unable to save for her dream of starting another creative and community-focused venture, but paying her bills is a serious struggle. It is completely consuming her. She is selling the house she lives in, and her dream is to use her share of the proceeds to move to southern Italy and start her life afresh, but these five years of futile struggle have broken her, however strong she may be. She has always fought for others and supported her fellow self-actualising WOMEN, but now she is exhausted.
