Flooding in Spain - numbers and facts about DANA
At the end of October 2024, the eastern regions of Spain were hit by massive floods. Intense rainfall led to rivers rising uncontrollably and flooding vast areas of Castilla and Valencia. It is said that some places felt as much rain in 24 hours as normally should throughout the whole year.
The media reported that the flooding was caused by 'Storm DANA'. However, this is not the name actually given to this weather phenomenon. DANA is a short for “Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos” (or “Isolated High-Level Depression” in English). It occurs when cold air at high altitudes meets warm, moist air near the ground, creating intense storms. These storms can bring heavy rain, which often leads to severe flooding, like the flash floods that have affected parts of Spain.
The scale of the devastation led the country's authorities to declare a three-day national mourning. At least 217 people lost their lives as a result of the disaster. Countless people had to leave their homes. The flooding destroyed road infrastructure, railway tracks and fields. It has also taken the homes and possessions that the Valencian people had accumulated throughout their whole lives.
Spanish emergency services, the military, volunteers and NGOs are helping the victims of the flood. Thanks to online fundraising, the whole world can join them and contribute to the relief funds for flood victims in Valencia.
How to get help as a flood victim?
If you are the person who needs help you can set up a fundraiser for yourself. There are certainly many people who will want to show their support at least by giving you financial relief.
Setting up a fundraiser is a simple process. Just click on the button below and we will guide you step by step through the most important steps of setting up a fundraiser.
Create fundraiser - for free, no fee!

Before you get started, prepare some photos to illustrate your situation and think about how you want to write your story. A carefully crafted description and photographs will help you appeal to the donators.
Donating to your fundraiser will be possible after a short verification of your identity. The verification process involves completing your details on the form, uploading photos of your identity document and a biometric check of your face. This is necessary for security reasons. We have to ensure donors who they are supporting. Don't worry though, the whole process takes about 7 minutes and is very intuitive.
You are 7 minutes away from starting your own relief fund. All the money you raise is yours from start to finish. You don't have to fundraise until you reach your goal, or stop fundraising when things go unexpectedly well. There are no limits to the kindness on 4fund.com.
How can you relieve Valencia?
There are many ways to get involved in helping those affected by the flash floods in Valencia. If you want to do something meaningful, you're in the right place. Check out how you can help from near and far!
Help on the spot
The landscape after the flood wave passed cannot be described in words. We can write about the tons of slime that covers the street, the mud that seeps into houses, and cars that have been tossed around like marbles by the water. However, we will never be able to tell in simple words about the emotions of the survivors, on the one hand, happy to have saved their lives, and on the other deprived of a home, clothing, food and even clean water.
At the scene of the tragedy, every help is welcome. Every person who is able and willing to shovel silt from the streets, remove damaged furnishings from homes or help stock and issue material aid parcels is worth their weight in gold.
To get involved in helping in Valencia, contact the local humanitarian aid organisation. State your availability and ask how you can help. Even if your chosen organisation does not need volunteers at the moment, they can point you to places and people who need extra hands.
If your loved ones have been affected by the floods, you can help them get material support from good-hearted people. On 4fund.com you can set up a free fundraiser for yourself or another in need.
