Description

Dear Interested Parties,

Since the first commemoration organised in Buda Castle in 1997, I have dedicated my life to organising memorial tours, producing interviews with veterans to preserve their stories, and excavating and maintaining military graves. With the support of a wonderful community of comrades, I wrote and published a book in 2021 that fills a gap in the literature, dedicated to the undeservedly forgotten military heroes and martyred priests of our beloved capital. Following this, I felt the time had come for my comrades and me to continue our work of preserving and creating value within a legally registered association. We would like to make a film based on recollections, documented events and stories about the defensive battles during the siege of our beloved capital, and then – in one of the most hopeless military ventures in our history – about the Hungarian soldiers who took part in the breakout. There are excerpts from roughly 40 books, ranging from half a page in some places to several pages of excellent recollections in others. We would like to weave these into a good, authentic screenplay, and then use it as the basis for a feature film rich in battle scenes. The aim is to showcase the heroism and fierce struggle of our unjustly forgotten Hungarian soldiers. To set the record straight, or rather to wash away all the slander and lies that have been heaped upon them for decades by self-righteous pundits with a foreign mindset. The film would have roughly 4–6 main characters, so that it isn’t too fragmented and remains easy to follow. To this end, we would weave around 40 flashbacks into the story of these few main characters. We also wish to commemorate the women who were defiled, our martyred priests, and the civilians who lost their lives in the fighting.

We shot the first scenes in the Buda Hills in January 2023. Our short film proposal reached the management of the National Film Institute, from whom we received promises regarding the realisation of this film. Unfortunately, we have since realised that, apart from empty words, we have received nothing else. That is why we wish to present this short film to the public, so that the Hungarian people may see and feel the stories of our former heroes, whose faces gaze back at us from the carefully preserved military photographs in our family albums, and so that we may commemorate their valour. We want to tell their stories and show their fate during the Second World War. We owe them at least that much. Through joint effort, help and any form of support, we can make this dream a reality.

We trust that there is a spiritual connection and empathy with our soldiers who took part in the battles to defend our beloved capital. We hope that, by working together, we can realise this shared dream.
