Description

Have you ever wondered what happens to laying hens when they no longer produce enough eggs? After just 15 to 18 months, the industry considers them ‘spent’. But on my 2,000-square-metre plot in Hungary, a place is currently being created where these animals can experience, for the first time, what a real hen’s life is all about.

Why a chicken rescue?

In modern egg production, hens often have barely any space and never see daylight. When their egg-laying performance declines, the slaughterhouse usually awaits. My aim is to give these animals a second chance at life. Here in Hungary, we have the space, the peace and the passion to create a true chicken paradise.

The plan: a 20-square-metre luxury coop for rescued souls

A good coop is essential for the rehabilitation of traumatised chickens. I am planning a 20-square-metre shelter (5 x 4 metres) that is state-of-the-art.

Here are the highlights of the project:

  • Sand & forest floor zone: Chickens love variety! A sand zone is for preening, whilst the area with real forest floor (deep litter) encourages natural scratching.
  • Maximum protection: Thanks to a solid strip foundation (60–80 cm deep) and special aviary wire, martens and foxes don’t stand a chance.
  • Optimal climate: A monopitch roof made of sandwich panels and a sophisticated ventilation system ensure the coop remains comfortable all year round – vital for the often frail animals from the factory farming system.

Be part of the project: Your honeycomb on our wall

As I am financing this project entirely through crowdfunding and donations, you are at the heart of it. I don’t just want to ask for your support, but to involve you directly in the construction – and in a visible way!

Our “Foundation of Freedom” is taking shape on the barn’s outer wall . For every donation of €25 or more, I’ll craft a hexagonal wooden honeycomb from sturdy robinia or larch. Using a precision laser, I’ll engrave your name or even your photo (or that of your pet) directly into the wood.

In this way, our donor wall grows piece by piece with every chicken saved!
