My husband is a dedicated doctor, an ophthalmologist surgeon, who has served in Cyprus’ public healthcare system for over 30 years. He has devoted his entire career to caring for others, always choosing to remain in the public sector. Like many government employees, he relied solely on the state healthcare system and never had private medical insurance. On February 24, 2025, he was admitted to the General Hospital with a high fever. He was soon diagnosed with endocarditis, a severe infection that caused critical damage to his aortic and mitral heart valves. Despite the hospital doctors’ best efforts, his condition worsened, leading to kidney failure. Realizing that time was running out and that the hospital could no longer help him, on February 27, we rushed him to a private hospital. By the time he arrived, his kidneys had shut down, and he had slipped into a coma. The doctors fought tirelessly to bring him back, and after stabilizing him, they prepared him for urgent life-saving heart surgery. Although he showed some improvement, on March 8, he began struggling to breathe due to pulmonary edema—a dangerous fluid buildup in the lungs. There was no time to wait. On March 11, he underwent a 12-hour emergency surgery to replace both his aortic and mitral valves. He remains in a medically induced sleep to aid his recovery. Why I Need Your Help The cost of this hospitalization and surgery has already exceeded €70,000, and the expenses continue to rise. Despite my husband’s lifelong contribution to the public health system, my request for financial assistance from the government was rejected. Shockingly, I was told that spending money on his case was unnecessary, that “even a butcher could do it.” I am devastated. I cannot bring him home yet. I cannot move him back to the government hospital. And next week, I must make another significant payment to ensure he continues to receive the life-saving care he needs.
