Introduction: why do we need an alternative to WhatsApp?

The European Union is preparing a controversial regulation known as "chat control" that would allow blanket scanning of private communications on apps like WhatsApp, Signal orTelegram under the pretext of fighting child pornography. Why do we need to act now?
