"Andrei's last toy"

Andrei is only 6 years old. He loves trains, dinosaur stories and playing hide-and-seek with his little sister Maria. They live with their mother in a room in a social centre after their father died in a work accident two years ago. Since then, their life has been a journey full of trials.

Mum Ana does the best she can. She washes the stairs, does the ironing, walks wherever she can. But sometimes even that's not enough. There are days when there's nothing to put on the table, and evenings when Andrei asks his mum if Santa Claus will find him this year, it breaks her heart.

Andrei was recently diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia. His doctor told Ana he urgently needed treatment in a clinic abroad. The costs are huge for a single mum who can barely afford bus fare.

One evening, when his mum told him she needed to save up money so he could go to the hospital, Andrei went quietly and put his only toy - an old plastic toy train - in a paper bag.

"We can sell it. It's my favourite train, but maybe another little boy will play with it. I just want to get well and play with Maria again."
