SINAPSE – Just for show

A festival dedicated to disability, organised by people with disabilities

3 December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and it makes us think about just how excluded we are, how few places there are that we can actually get to, let alone stay in .

Most events or venues do not take into account wheelchair users or those on crutches, people with sensory sensitivities, blind or deaf people, or those who cannot afford an entry ticket because they cannot find a job due to discrimination. They throw together some half-hearted accessibility measures, just for show.

Perhaps people think we can’t have fun. That our lives are sad, that we don’t need culture, and that we can’t get involved in society. Hmm, strange, given that the vast majority of social struggles are led by minorities. Given that we have communities that are so close-knit, so vibrant.

All these assumptions and barriers frustrate us. But our community deserves to be celebrated. So we’ve combined these two spirits – protest and fun – into a mini-festival that brings together culture and education, from 4 to 6 December.

And we want admission to be by donation, with no minimum. (Yes, that means you can get in for as little as ten bani!) Any money raised at the event, for those who are able to give, will go towards an emergency fund for the community.

We refuse to be sidelined any longer, so we’re organising this from scratch, with our needs and yours in mind. To make SINAPSE a reality, we need your support.

What are we raising money for right now?

- venue hire

- fees for artists and guests

- organisational work

- LSR performers

- technicians, sound engineers

- unlimited snacks and drinks

- production materials

- accommodation and transport for the organising team
