Whilst I was in Bali, I did some voluntary work with the Setulus Hati charity and we went to visit Agus and his father

Agus is a 10-year-old boy with both physical and neurological disabilities 

His father does everything he can to look after him 

His mum died during childbirth 

His father works as a farmer and tries to take on only jobs that allow him to return home every evening, but when he runs out of money and food, he is forced to accept whatever work is on offer

Sometimes he has to stay away from home for one or two nights, leaving Agus at home on his own 

He doesn’t eat 

He doesn’t drink 

He doesn’t go to the toilet 

Sometimes he even falls off the bed and stays there, in the rain, waiting for his dad to come back and put him back on the table 

When we arrived at their house, I knew what to expect; they’d told me their story 

And yet, after seeing his dad smile and seeing Agus smile, I burst into tears like an idiot 

I hid myself away straight away because it felt like a lack of respect towards them – they lead such a hard life and still manage to smile 

 We brought him some rice, eggs and a bit of money 

But it’s not enough! Guys, I need your help 

I’d like them to at least have enough to eat so that the dad can stay at home without leaving Agus on his own 

Then the most ambitious project is to create a new source of income for his dad! That man is a whizz with his hands; he’s a true artist capable of carving the most incredible figures out of a log or a block of stone
