My mum is a woman who has fought all her life, even when the odds were stacked against her.

She never complained, she never gave up.

When I was little, we lived with my grandparents. My dad went abroad to work and left debts behind. Mum was left alone with three children, whilst also looking after her sick parents. On top of that, she worked in the family pub, which she’d inherited after her wedding and which she’d spent years building up with her own hands, with love and diligence, so she could look after us all.

But life kept throwing obstacles in her path. Grandad fell ill and died in hospital, and two years later, Grandma passed away too (at home). Because of the debts, we had to give up the inn, into which Mum had poured her whole heart.

She didn’t give up and tried again. She opened another pub. But shortly after it opened, it was burgled and set on fire. The pub was uninhabitable and all her hard work was gone.

Even then, she didn’t break down.

We tried one more time and bought another pub, this time outside our hometown, but because of debts we eventually had to sell our family home, which had belonged to our grandmother and grandfather… and eventually the last pub too.

We never opened another one.

But Mum never stopped working. She toiled all her life, looked after others, and helped wherever she could. She could never afford a holiday, a rest, or to put anything aside.

Now, just when she deserves some peace, health problems have struck. She had to undergo eye surgery (she can barely see out of one eye) and all the money she had went towards this treatment.

Now she has just one wish left: to have her teeth fixed so she can eat without pain again and smile without shame.

Unfortunately, the cost of the procedure is beyond her means.

That is why I am asking for your help.

After everything she has done for us and for others, Mum deserves a little joy and dignity.
