Csilla’s story in brief
Csilla had been saving up for years to buy her own flat in Budapest. In 2024, she found a small flat, for which she paid 33 million forints, having carried out all the necessary checks and involved a solicitor.
However, after the payment, it turned out that she had fallen victim to a serious fraud: the property had previously been taken from its real owner through criminal meansand had been resold several times. As a result, the Land Registry ultimately did not register Csilla’s title, so she did not receive the flat, nor did she get her money back from the seller.
Today, Csilla finds herself having lost all her savings and is currently trying, amidst lengthy legal proceedings, to reclaim what is rightfully hers. So far, however, she has been unsuccessful: in the lawsuit brought against the Land Registry , the Land Registry admitted it had made a mistake but ruled that she was not entitled to ownership; in the lawsuit brought against the seller, the court ruled that the contract with the seller was valid. According to the two rulings, Csilla is currently entitled to neither the flat nor the money. The Supreme Court rejected her appeal on procedural grounds , and the police are investigating. In addition to the purchase price of 33 million forints , a further 6 million forints in legal fees and 3 million forints in subletting costs have been incurred up to May, bringing her total losses to around 42 million forints at present.
