Step zero. At present, the collapsed roof of the cottage has been cleared away, and the debris has been removed... for some reason I started counting; I’m currently at 370 wheelbarrows, but there’s still a little left to go. In order to save the cottage, it needs to be dug around completely to a depth of 60 centimetres and the trench filled with gravel. This will allow soil and rainwater to drain away from the adobe walls. Once this is done, we can inspect and preserve the walls; in the front garden and at the arched entrance, we’ll be able to build the rubble-stone retaining wall needed to keep the structure intact.

That’s where we’re at for now; new articles are coming to the blog, and I’ll be posting here too. :)

Description

Preserving the story of an old, enchanted cottage

Hi! My name is Sándor, and I’m working on renovating an old building perched on a hilltop. This place has stood abandoned for decades, but it has always enchanted those who pass by. There’s something about it that’s worth saving. My aim is not to let this house disappear, but to breathe new life into it, step by step.

At present, the building is in poor condition in several places; the bureaucratic process took nearly three years before the house came into my possession. During this time, the building was broken into several times and, to top it all off, the roof collapsed. The surroundings were in disarray, and a huge amount of work still lies ahead of me. I’m doing most of the renovation myself, working at my own pace. This isn’t a quick project, but a longer process that involves mistakes, learning and small steps forward. Clearing away the rubble and tidying up the garden are all wonderful processes, but moving forward on my own is difficult.

For me, this place means more than just a building. It is an opportunity to create something tangible from the ruins, whilst preserving a piece of a world that is disappearing elsewhere. It is important to me that this process is transparent, and that others can see how such a place is being transformed. The previous owner erected statues linked to Hungarian history over 30 years ago. The buildings’ uniqueness is impressive, but they are in danger.

I will spend all the donations received entirely on the renovation: on structurally reinforcing the building, carrying out essential repairs, landscaping the surroundings and purchasing the necessary equipment. Every contribution enables a specific step in this process, and I will document this process publicly on the ChillCamp website dedicated to the renovation.

In the longer term, I would like this place not only to be preserved, but also to be opened up to others from time to time – as a quiet, nature-oriented space where one can pause for a while. But for now, the first step is simply to save it.

Thank you for contributing to this journey – whether through financial support or simply by following the process. I am extremely grateful for your help!
