A year ago, my life changed dramatically. My girlfriend, with whom I had hoped to build a future, fell into a deep depression. I did everything I could to support her, but after a heated argument with her family, her condition worsened. While I was driving, she suddenly jumped out of the car, breaking her femur and tearing ligaments. She was rushed to a hospital in a foreign country, where we found out she didn’t have health insurance yet.

From that moment on, our battle began – not only for her recovery but also to deal with the overwhelming medical bills. I stayed by her side every day, helping her through this tough time, often translating for doctors since she didn’t speak the local language. At the same time, we faced judgment from people around us, adding even more stress to an already difficult situation.

Sadly, due to my constant late arrivals at work while caring for her, I lost my job after 10 years of steady employment. Although social assistance covered part of the medical costs, we are still left with around €8,000 in outstanding hospital bills. I’ve been doing every odd job I can to make ends meet, but it’s just not enough.

To make matters worse, during one of our drives, I was involved in a car accident. This added another €5,000 in damages that we now owe for the repair of the other vehicle.

Today, we find ourselves overwhelmed by debt collectors, mounting bills, and constant anxiety. My girlfriend has recently found a job, and I’m still taking on any extra work I can, but we simply can’t break free from this financial spiral.
