Description
Would you like to go to the cinema to see a film that really 'hits home' through your senses?
One that finally has no beating about the bush, no superfluous dialogue?
Instead, more music, noise, sound, melody, harmony and dissonance – a presence that promises and hints at everything?
I’m working on a story that I dreamt up, almost in a feverish dream, a few years ago at the Szeged Jazz Days.
Join me in experimenting with what it means to understand, feel and know exactly what is happening without words...
Metszetekwill be a short film, a visual journey throughLuca Kézdy’s distinctive, unique musical world. A ‘film of feelings’, the foundation of which, at its inception, was the music – the canvas onto which I layered the events, emotions and experiences. During the creative process, the footage already shot will inspire Luca’s improvisational playing as the story comes to life before her. This is how we come full circle. What his acting sparked in me back then, we’ll translate into moving images with the crew; he’ll receive these, with the opportunity to let them pass through him, filter them through himself, and add his own “interpretation”. It will be a non-verbal experience; I promise, we’ll rely on everything else, just not on words.
The story:
We find ourselves at the intersection of two worlds as we enter the lives of our characters; two solitary universes drift together, and we witness this from the very beginning. Vera, a self-reflective painter living in the hustle and bustle of Budapest, enjoying her freedom, and Kornél, a forester and mushroom hunter who has shut himself away in the silence of the forests of the Balaton Uplands, wrestling with his past.
I want to portray a complex emotional rollercoaster that speaks of the unhealed wounds within us, their healing, or the possibility of them reopening. I am trying to capture that familiar set of feelings when the beginning of a new relationship can be hopeful, optimistic and full of enthusiasm, and then suddenly everything changes. Where we end up remains a secret.
Eszter Bánfalvi takes on the role of Vera , whose latest production at the Jurányi Theatre is *I Killed My Mother! * Kornél is played by Barna Bokor, whilst Gábor Bethlen stars in the *Fairy Garden* series.
The film is shot by DOP Gábor Szabó, whose most recent work was *Random*, and before that *The Martfű Monster*, *Tirza*, *Job’s Rebellion* and *Hide and Seek in the City*, to name but a few.
Visual world:
The misty dawns of the Balaton Uplands, its natural expansiveness and silence, contrasted with the bustling, lively, narrow streets of central Budapest, provide the setting, whilst Luca’s transcendent violin solos dictate the rhythm of the scenes. There is a certain timelessness to the film and the story, which is felt through the visual world, the colours, the lighting and the composition of the images, shot with vintage-style lenses. It is as if we were looking at a series of photographs taken with an old camera, a picture book from the past, evoking a story in which we have most certainly played a part.
Searching for a path – hope – carefree moments – self-discovery – self-esteem – intention – commitment... and to find out where our protagonists fit into all this, we need your help.
