Description
In early August 2025, I was diagnosed with glioblastoma. It is a very aggressive brain tumour.
I found out about it by getting increasingly dizzy, having memory problems and often fainting. Then, after a bout of nausea, the diagnosis came, confirmed by CT scan and later by histology: grade 4 glioblastoma, the highest grade of malignant brain tumour.
I had surgery, I am in the hands of fantastic doctors. However, my life chances depend on how successfully the tumour can be prevented from recurring, which is unfortunately very common with this type of tumour. Even if the visible tumour is completely removed during surgery, there are often microscopic tumour cells that are not always visible on imaging scans and therefore cannot be completely removed, so the tumour can grow again later and return. The cells in glioblastoma divide very rapidly, so the disease often recurs even if the surgery was successful.
For this reason, the average survival time is 3-4 months without oncological treatment and 10-15 months with conventional treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy). Conventional therapies (radiotherapy and chemotherapy with drugs) are rarely effective in the long term in completely killing all remaining cancer cells. Moreover, glioblastoma cells are often resistant to these therapies.
Having said that, I hope that my body will respond well to the conventional therapy (radiotherapy, chemotherapy) that will start in September.
However, I want to fight for my cure on several fronts!
With personalised vaccines for a cure!
Years ago, a cancer clinic in Germany developed an immunotherapy procedure. The idea is to create a special peptide chain vaccine, based on the genetic characteristics of the tumour and the patient, to "wake up" the patient's immune system to fight the cancer cells through a so-called neoantigen-specific T-cell response. This means that a personalised drug or vaccine, specifically tailored to the patient's own genetic profile, is produced with the same care and manufacturing conditions as a commonly used drug.
The treatment method used by the clinic and a detailed description of the results so far have been published in Nature, a leading source of scientific research. The importance of the procedure is demonstrated by the fact that it has already been approved by the FDA, the US Food and Drug Administration.
Based on patient statistics to date, I have a 95% chance of surviving for at least 32 months, but based on my age, the current stage of my disease, my other health parameters and the statistics to date, I have a good chance of being one of the treatment recipients who have survived for 5 years.
Costs
The total cost of treatment is around €98 000.
The therapy is a personalised development and is not covered by health insurance.
The costs include:
- Transport of tissue samples and fresh blood samples to the clinic.
- Preparation of the peptide chain on which the vaccine series is based. Time required 3-4 weeks.
- Production of a personalised vaccine. This takes 2.5-3.5 months. Total cost for the development and production of the serum is € 80 000
- After completion of the serum, travel to Vilnius for 4-5 days of clinical vaccination treatment. The Vilnius clinic works in close cooperation with the German clinic, where the vaccinations are carried out.
- Over the next 1 to 1.5 years, I will have to travel to Vilnius for a total of 11 treatments, where the immune response will be continuously monitored and the vaccine formulation adjusted if necessary.
If you have any questions about the disease or the treatment, feel free to contact me!
