Description

The church in Cherépváralja is a very important work both in the life's work of the designer László Csaba and in the history of Hungarian architecture. The church was completed in 1961 with the active participation of the village community. It is the first truly modern church of the post-war period. In the 60 years since then the church has deteriorated considerably. Its restoration is the

It will be renovated with the support of the Hungarian Government in 2023. In addition to its architectural value, the church is also important for its artistic value. László Csaba involved two contemporary artists, Béla Kondor and József Somogyi, who were highly respected and widely acclaimed at the time, in the design of the altar space. Kondor created the tabernacle door and Somogyi the corpus.

The corpus is an early example of Somogyi's highly expressive depictions of the agony of self-sacrifice without the cross, through the mere sight of the body. Since the parish could not afford to cast it in bronze, Somogyi donated the plaster model to the church. The sculpture was fixed to the wall with staples in the back, so that the limbs extended freely into the air - the body seemed to float in front of the white plaster. However, the parishioners were reluctant to accept the sculpture, the tabernacle door was repainted and the body was moved to the church foyer. So László Csaba travelled to Cserépváralja and, in consultation with the parish priest at the time, removed the works.

The architectural restoration, together with the openness of the locals and the heirs, has made it possible not only to restore the church to its original state, but also to return the tabernacle door and the corpus to their original position. The painting had previously been restored by László Csaba at his own expense, but the architect's heirs have preserved it and, on the news of the rehabilitation of the building, have taken the initiative to restore it to its original place.

The sculpture was found in 2023 in a carpentry workshop at the heirs' home. Its storage there saved it from destruction, but it was damaged in several places and badly deteriorated. To identify the damage and investigate the possibilities of restoration, sculptor János Meszlényi, a student of Somogyi, made suggestions. Both the parishioners and the heirs would welcome the restoration of the tabernacle door and the carcass, but the current state of the church does not allow this. The construction has completely consumed the state subsidy, and the money saved by the local community is mainly used to make furniture for the church.

the church's furniture. Therefore, the architects of the restoration (Partizan Architecture: Zoltán Major, Péter Müllner) and their collaborators are seeking your help to restore this unique work of József Somogyi to its original splendour and condition.
