My name is Sylwia Kaminska. I am a grandmother who has become a mum and dad to my grandchildren. We are a foster family. I tried to make our modest home a safe haven of love for the children. Unfortunately, in an instant, that safety was destroyed.

Our flat was flooded. Everything I had worked so hard to build up over the years was ruined by damp in a matter of hours.

​What hurts me most is that instead of a cosy place to learn and play, we now have a room that resembles a dark, cold cellar. Damp is seeping through the walls, the plaster is falling off, and the musty smell is unbearable. Children cannot live, sleep or grow up in such conditions. It poses a threat to their health.

My financial situation is very difficult. I spend all my money on the children’s day-to-day upkeep, their education and their needs. After paying the bills and for medicines, I have nothing left. I cannot afford to hire a renovation team, or even to buy basic materials – dehumidifiers, skim coat or paint.

I feel helpless. As a grandmother, I should be protecting my grandchildren, but this time the wall that is our home has simply cracked.

Every zloty you donate will be used for:

• ​Professional wall drying (to prevent mould, which is dangerous for children),
• ​The purchase of building materials (plaster, skim coat, primers),
• ​Paint to decorate the rooms in bright, cheerful colours,
• Replacing floor elements or furniture damaged by water.
