Description
The Baltazár Theatre was founded in January 1998. The core of its professional company is made up of actors with disabilities – a first in Hungary, and one that remains unique to this day. The Baltazár Theatre’s productions are created in collaboration with people with disabilities, yet they are not about disability. The Baltazár Theatre treats disability as a natural fact of life. We believe that, regardless of social or health circumstances, everyone is an equally important part of society. The Baltazár Theatre’s productions highlight this, rather than emphasising ‘disadvantage’.
The company’s professional work highlights that our actors do not fit into the traditional category of ‘disabled’; they far exceed it. Every single production by the Baltazár Theatre is living proof that general perceptions of marginalised groups can be transcended, and that the values represented by individual people exist independently of their social or health status. This is possible because we strive for the highest quality in all our activities, be it theatre, photography or advertising. This standard should not be judged ‘relative to’ anything else, but in relation to the absolute whole.
Over the past 27 years, 29 theatre productions have been created in the Baltazár Theatre’s creative workshop. We have toured Hungary with our productions, visited theatres in countless foreign countries, and taken part in numerous domestic and international festivals.
In 2002, the Baltazár Theatre received the Pro Cultura Urbis Award for its cultural activities. The Baltazár Theatre Foundation, which was also named Civil Organisation of the Year in 2003, was awarded the Millennium Prize by the National Office for Intellectual Property in April 2012 in recognition of its unique work.
