20.01 Update 3 #crowdfundingforLera
After 4 chemos Lera had a successful stomach removal in the mid-December. The doctors created a substitute - "a new stomach" out of the bowel so that it can with time perform some functions of the missing organ. Two weeks later she was already dismissed home and could celebrate Christmas and New Year with her family. Around this time Olga went to Tashkent for a visit.
The good new is that Lera is recovering pretty well, she is trying to eat normally by little portions. It's incredible but the life without a stomach is possible! The doctors are planning to proceed with 4 more chemotherapies once the body is healed enough. It is important to do so in order to fix the result and stop metastasis. We are still far from reaching the crowdfunding goal, but we continue. This Saturday, January 20th, Andreas and Olga are teaching in Zoom again to help raise funds for Lera. If you would like to join, that will be of much help!
Thank you one more time everyone for your donations and personal engagement! All the little chats where you ask us how it is all going matter too.
P.S. these photos were taken during Olga's visit and demonstrate Lera's enlarged collection of colorful hats

Tuairisc
This is our friend Valeriya (Lera). She is an amazing human being, kind, intelligent and caring. She is not a swing dancer herself but she got connected to the scene when she adopted a 10-year old Martha in 2015 when her mom (a lindyhopper from Moscow) died of cancer. Lera has 3 more kids (aged 13, 5 and 3 now), the last one Lenya was born with a Down syndrom.
Olga has known Lera since childhood and they are very close.
On September 8th Lera ended up in the hospital emergency with bleeding and was diagnosed with stomach cancer, stage 2/3. It's an aggressive type of cancer and she urgently needs to have her stomach completely removed. The surgery is currently impossible to do though, as the cancer has spread. She had to start with chemotherapy and is scheduled for four sessions of chemo therapy. Surgery will only be possible if the cancer spread is stopped. If the chemo therapy works well and the surgery can be done, she is scheduled for four more sessions of chemo therapy. The doctors planned about 8 months of treatment in total for now.
The situation would be easier if they were in Russia (as the treatment is partially covered by government subsidies), but last year, to avoid having Lera's husband, Andrey, being drafted, they had to flee their home and ended up living in Uzbekistan.
All the cancer treatment in Uzbekistan has to be paid for by themselves. In addition, since Lera can’t take a full care of the kids during her treatment and Andrey will have to work to support the family, they will need a babysitter/domestic help.
There is an urgent need for money for both the treatment and for the domestic help. This crowdfunding campaign aims to help them out. In the coming eight months they will need the following amount:
Chemo port (€300) with insertion (€214) = €514
Chemotherapy (8 courses *€652 each) = €5316
Hospital stay: €200 * 8times = € 1600
Babysitter/ domestic help: €350 * 8 months = €2800
Stomach surgery: unknown for now
Diagnostics/tests : €900 + unknown as there will most likely be other required tests during the course of treatment
Total: €11130
This is the current estimation, in fact we don't know exactly how much money will be needed in the end, but we will keep you updated.
Any sum (€5, 10, 20, 50 or more) you are willing to spend would be a big relief and makes Lera's urgent treatment possible and taking care of kids more manageable. We really hope that with help she can come as a winner over this disease and continue living a long happy life with her family.
From the bottom of our hearts and Lera's family's we humbly ask that you share this link with friends and family and if possible, in giving (any amount will help immensely).
We thank you all for your support!

Love seeing dancers support other dancers, we were helped by our lovely dance pals when in need and were so overwhelmed and humbled that they cared enough to surprise us with their support so we know what it means to have you do this.
Thank you Mick!
