Description
Although a ceasefire was signed between Israel and Hamas back in October 2025, its terms are not being met. People displaced from their homes are living in tents and going hungry, as very little food is getting into Gaza. As a result, the food that is available is expensive, and there are very few opportunities to earn a living amongst the rubble.
Through one of the donor platforms, we came into contact with a Palestinian civilian, Angham Al-Najjar, who was actively seeking help. Since March 2026, we have been corresponding with her almost daily by email, using a translation tool. Angham Al-Najjar is an indomitable woman who has survived both Covid and famine, yet she never gives up. Even in difficult times, she looks after not only her own family but also the poorest people around her. Since childhood, she has been known by the nickname Nana, which means ‘gentleness, compassion, mercy and love’.
Nana is 31 years old and lives with her family in a tent in Khan Yunis, in the Al-Mawasi area in southern Gaza. She has a chronically ill husband, Siam, and four children: her son Yuda is 12, and her daughters, Alaa and Maria, are 10 and 6 years old. This year, on 30 June 2026, she gave birth to a baby boy, Abdullah.
Ever since we’ve been in contact, we’ve been helping Nana and her friends, because her and her family’s lives are at stake. They have no income whatsoever. We’re trying to send at least 9,000 Kč a month to cover basic food for the family, nappies and baby formula. We’ve also managed to raise money amongst our friends for the baby’s layette, but most importantly for the hospital birth, which cost a total of 35,000 Kč. Nana now has to keep the baby with her at all times, as there are rats running around their tent that could bite him.
Little Abdullah fell ill in September, and his hospital stay, tests and medication cost over 20,000 Kč, which we also managed to raise. Abdullah survived and is now feeling better. However, we are drawing heavily on our own savings. That is why we have decided to launch this fundraising campaign, to give others the chance to support Nana, her family and her community.
Who we’re helping
Nana and her family’s very survival depends on us. All the money you send will go directly to her. Nana will use it not only for her own family, but also for the 120 families living in Khan Yunis in tents around hers. Many of them, just like Nana’s family, were displaced from the town of Khuza’a near the border with Israel. Their homes were then razed to the ground by the Israeli army.
Nana cannot bear to see the hungry families with children around her and repeatedly begs us to send something for them too. On several occasions, we managed to collect 10,000 Kč from friends, and Nana once used this sum to order water (5,000 litres) for the whole camp.
On another occasion, about a week after giving birth, she used this money to distribute hot meals – a sort of vegetable dumpling – baked at the local market to the neighbouring families. It was also a way of thanking God for the safe birth of her child. Her husband and brother organised most of it, but Nana insisted on getting out of bed (she’d had a caesarean section) and handing out the food herself.
Now Nana has decided that if we can raise more money, she will gradually accompany the poorest local families to the grocery shop so that they can buy the non-perishable foodstuffs they need for two to three weeks – oil, lentils and so on. So far, we have only managed to raise 12,000 Kč once amongst our friends, which helped the eight poorest families secure enough food for about three weeks.
The photographs show Abdullah, who was ill (and is now back home), a water delivery paid for by Nana, and two pictures of Nana with the children. Thanks to our contribution, we were able to buy baby equipment and other essentials (nappies, a mattress, baby oil, baby formula) for the baby before it was born – the photo shows her sitting with the items we bought. Although Nana is breastfeeding, it is not enough and she has to supplement it with formula, just like most mothers in Gaza, because they are exhausted and malnourished.
Helping Nana and her community is a long-term endeavour. We’ll be grateful for every contribution, no matter how small, and everything you send will go to this family and community.
How exactly will the money from this fundraiser be used?
If we raise 4,500 EUR (approx. 100,000 CZK), €2,025 (i.e. 45,000 CZK) will go towards monthly payments for Nana and her family to cover their most basic needs (9,000 CZK per month, for a total of 5 months). A further 720 EUR (16,000 Kč) will go towards shoes, clothes and school bags for the children, as well as some toys. The remaining 1,755 EUR (39,000 CZK) will go towards food for the poorest families. We estimate that 1,755 EUR, i.e. 39,000 CZK, should make a significant difference to around 26 families!
Nana selects the families herself, as she knows them well. She accompanies them to the shop and pays for whatever the family buys. She always sends us photos or videos from each such visit or event funded by our money. Although she doesn’t have electricity in her tent, there is a mobile phone charging point nearby. However, even that has to be paid for.
Finally, we’ll hand over to Nana herself: “Please pass on my thanks and gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this initiative. You’re not just providing us with food. You’re giving hope and dignity to families living in very difficult conditions. I will never forget this love you have shown me, as long as I live. I will pray for you in every one of my prayers. I ask God to protect you and everyone who has helped us, and to reward you generously.”
