Updates2

  • Dear Donors,

We are delighted to report that Ádám has travelled to the centre in Tübingen with his tumour and blood samples and has successfully submitted them. This marks the start of the diagnostic process, which will take around one and a half months and will form the basis for the production of the vaccine.

The cost of producing the vaccine will be a further €60,000, for which we are continuing to raise funds.

We are very grateful for any further support and for sharing this, so that our fundraising campaign can reach as many donors as possible!

Description

Dear Friends, Acquaintances and Supporters!

The three of us siblings (Ádám, Viktor and Kati) are joining forces for a huge cause: to help our father recover.

Our father was diagnosed with glioblastoma in April 2026. This is the most aggressive type of brain tumour known, and it is almost certain to recur even with conventional surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The treatments may add months to his life, but not a full recovery. We are expected to have one year left to spend with our father.

After consulting with our father’s doctors, we learnt that the most advanced treatment available is a personalised tumour immunotherapy, which significantly increases the patient’s chances of survival and improves their quality of life. The vaccine is produced in Germany, and the therapy must be administered in Lithuania. This therapy can be used as a complementary treatment.

The cost of the therapy is very high and is not covered by health insurance: it amounts to approximately €100,000, including associated expenses. We would like to ask our friends, acquaintances and kind-hearted donors for their help in raising this sum!

If you decide to donate, you can specify inthe Support the 4fund.com team’ section whether you would like to support the platform itself. By default, the slider is set to 20%; you can adjust this by dragging it to the right or left. It is important to note that this amount does not go towards our father’s treatment, but serves to support the company developing the platform.

Our story in detail

Our father, Zoltán Németh, began his retirement in April 2026 after 45 years of service. His wife, three children and eight grandchildren were all eagerly awaiting this period, which the family hoped would be a peaceful one.

However, on the third day after his retirement, our father suddenly fell ill and was taken to hospital by ambulance with suspected epileptic seizures. Following a CT scan, we received devastating news: Dad had been diagnosed with a brain tumour. Following the imaging tests, he underwent surgery and then a histological examination, which revealed a grade IV glioblastoma tumour.

Looking after our father’s health, he attended regular screening tests. Shortly before the brain tumour diagnosis, a cytological sample was taken due to an abnormality detected during a thyroid ultrasound scan. He received the results of this whilst in hospital for the brain tumour: the diagnosis was papillary thyroid carcinoma, which will require further surgery and, if necessary, radioiodine therapy.

Unfortunately, within the space of a few days, we were faced with two devastating diagnoses: both the brain tumour and the thyroid tumour were malignant, neither of which had presented any prior symptoms that might have aroused our suspicion.

Following his recovery period after brain surgery, on 12 May 2026, our father will begin a 30-day course of concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which he will undergo in full according to the treatment protocol, knowing that although he cannot hope for a complete cure, the treatment may add months to his life.

Who is our father?

Our parents have been married for 46 years and have three children and eight grandchildren. We are all devout Catholic Christians. With his exemplary diligence and values, our father is an eternal role model for us. As an electrical engineer and a ‘jack-of-all-trades’, countless people turn to him for help. We know of no one more helpful or more devoted to others than him.

It is hard to believe, hard to accept, that a life spent working tirelessly for others should not be followed by a happy retirement.

Why is this type of tumour so dangerous?

Glioblastoma is an extremely aggressive, fast-growing, malignant brain tumour which is not a clearly defined lump, but rather consists of tiny tumour cells that spread throughout the brain tissue.

During surgery, only the visible and physically accessible parts can be removed; however, microscopic cells may remain in the surrounding areas, from which the tumour can regrow within a few months.

The effectiveness of chemotherapy is hampered by the fact that the brain’s defence system, the blood-brain barrier, restricts the drugs from reaching the tumour cells.

According to international statistics, the average survival time for glioblastoma is 13–18 months. This is due to the nature of the disease itself, not because the surgery was unsuccessful or was not performed in time.

With this type of tumour, we cannot speak of a cure in the traditional sense. Surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, may add months to a patient’s life, but not a complete cure.

Intellectually, one can grasp this fact, but emotionally, it is very difficult to accept.

What other treatment options are there?

We learnt from our father’s doctors that, although it is not yet available in Hungary, there are high hopes for personalised tumour immunotherapy.

The vaccine used helps the patient’s immune system to recognise and destroy tumour cells – even those hidden cells that remain after surgery.

The clinical results – which are also featured in a scientific publication on Nature.com– are very encouraging. The median survival of treated patients was 32 months, which is more than double the usual rate. At the conclusion of the study, 54% of patients were still alive. For those who received treatment before the tumour recurred, the median survival had not yet been reached, as more than half of the patients were still alive. This is why it is crucial that treatment begins as soon as possible.

Immunotherapy is extremely expensive, and we are unable to finance it from our own resources. The diagnosis and preparation of the vaccine alone cost €80,000, but together with travel, organisational and other associated expenses, the total comes to approximately €100,000.

The process and costs of immunotherapy are as follows:

1.) The biopsy sample and blood are sent to the laboratory in Germany.

The clinic then checks the samples received and, using the DNA profile and the institute’s genetic database, can begin preparing the peptide chain that will form the basis of the subsequent vaccine once the first instalment (€20,000) has been paid. This takes approximately 6 weeks.

2.) Once the peptide chain has been successfully produced, serum production can begin following payment of the second instalment (€60,000). This takes 3–4 months.

3.) You will then need to travel to Lithuania, where the first 4–5-day course of treatment and observation can begin.

4.) Further treatments are scheduled every 4–6 weeks, at which point another trip abroad is required, this time for just 1–2 days, and the immune response is also monitored. The total duration of treatment is therefore 15–16 months, and we will also continue with the treatment in Hungary.

What do we hope to achieve?

We would like to give Dad the opportunity to try immunotherapy.

With this treatment, however, we could gain years and a good quality of life for our father; furthermore, we believe in improvement, perseverance, solidarity, and, as a devout Christian family, in the power of prayer. We would like our parents to be able to spend many more years together, for Dad to continue playing happily with his grandchildren, working in the garden, and helping his children and grandchildren with their everyday matters.

The tissue sample required to start treatment is available, and we could send it to the hospital carrying out the treatment.

How can you donate?

Donations are collected in euros, as we need to pay the clinic for the treatment in euros.

We are grateful for even small donations, because every little bit helps!

If the payment system is slow or encounters an error, please don’t let that stop you – it will work the second time. If the little hourglass icon doesn’t stop spinning, or the system indicates another problem, we recommend closing and reopening the window. Your donation won’t be charged twice, but if that does happen, we can of course refund it.

In the “Support the 4fund.com team” section, you can decide whether you’d like to support the website itself, the fundraising platform. By dragging the slider button—set to 20% by default—left or right, you can adjust the amount of your contribution, which is not allocated to our father’s treatment but is donated to the development company.

We ask for your help and support with the above!
