The Beast

Imprisonment leaves an indelible mark on anyone who experiences it, erasing shreds of dignity, blurring the nuances of being and making true reintegration into society extremely difficult, if not impossible. A society that often continues to see every ex-convict, whether man or woman, as an uncomfortable presence, a mistake... a beast.

This project is not intended to denounce the living conditions in prisons, a subject that has already been widely debated, nor to question the necessity of detention and the importance of rehabilitation paths aimed at restoring dignity to the human being, even before the detainee.

The Beauty

On the contrary, the aim of the project stands in stark contrast to today's social chorus: it wants to tell the story of how men and women are committed on a daily basis to sustaining and enhancing the human essence, offering a concrete possibility of redemption or, in any case, alleviating the difficulties of life in a cell.

Aims of the project

It will be an alternating glance between prisoners, with their stories and truths, institutions, represented by prison guards, warden, staff, and those external realities that, only through voluntary work and donations from individual citizens, provide support and concrete help through activities carried out both inside and outside prisons. All of this is done by promoting a narrative that goes beyond prejudice and stereotypes, without leading to denunciation or criticism.

The images, in black and white, will be taken using techniques that respect privacy, such as long exposure, to preserve the anonymity of those who wish not to be recognisable. Whenever possible, individual interviews with both inmates and staff will be included.
