Description
The Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the village of Choba is in urgent need of roof repairs. The amount required is 12,000 BGN, with 5,500 BGN having been raised from donations so far. The repairs will be carried out by brothers Boyko and Stanko with the help of other volunteers from the village.
According to the archives of the Plovdiv Metropolis, the church was built in 1858 following the issuance of a sultan’s firman.
The first school in the village of Choba was built at the north-western end of the churchyard, but it was destroyed in 1928 by the great earthquake. The church remained unscathed.
After 1944, like many other churches in Bulgaria, the church in the village of Choba was closed for nearly four decades, during which time it was looted and left in a state of disrepair.
After 1990, the people of Choba managed to restore the church, and today liturgies and church services are held there.
