From a dream home to a nightmare home

Please help us turn our house, which was built in a way that puts lives at risk, back into a safe home.

Why are we asking for help?

We’re asking for your support to make our house safe so that it can once again become a liveable home.

For a while, 2020–21 seemed like one of the best periods of our lives. We felt we were finally reaching the stage in life we’d always longed for: a crazy but peaceful, playful life with a large family in our own (newly built) home with a garden, in a quiet neighbourhood.

In the end, however, in 2021, we lost our long-awaited third child in the 38th week of pregnancy. A year later, we were faced with another serious situation: it turned out that our house, which we’d bought as a newly built property after careful consideration, was actually in a life-threatening condition.

At first, we were grateful that the problem had been uncovered in time and that no tragedy had occurred. We then devoted all our energy to finding a solution.

As the other party had failed to carry out the necessary repairs, we took the matter to court. They said they would accept the court’s decision and comply with it accordingly.

We won the case with a final and binding judgement. However, the awarded sum has not been paid, and the house has not yet been made safe or habitable as a result.

After four years of legal battles, we are now in a worse financial position than we were before the case began.

What did this mean in our day-to-day lives?

During the years of the legal proceedings, we lived in rented accommodation, whilst still having to pay:

• the mortgage;
• the upkeep and maintenance of the property in dispute (for example, heating, lawn mowing, etc.);
• utility bills;
• lawyers’ fees, expert fees and court costs;
• as well as the costs of renting and moving house.

The dangerous condition of the house also came to light as a result of our own investigations. We had to find experts, initiate surveys, gather evidence and finance all of this for years on end.

Under increased emotional strain due to the financial burden, we took on more work. As a result, very soon we were essentially working from the time the children left for nursery or school until they went to bed, simply so that our children would be less affected by the situation.

For a long time, we refused financial assistance because we were confident that the legal proceedings would bring a real solution. By now, however, we have had to realise that, although we have been vindicated by a final court ruling, we can only extricate ourselves from this situation very slowly under our own steam.

That is why we are now asking for help.

How will we use the donations?

We would like to use the target amount of 27,500 euros primarily to:

• to begin rectifying the dangerous structural defects in the house;
• carry out the necessary technical and expert work;
• mitigate the verifiable damage we have suffered in recent years;
• bring us closer to being able to live in a safe home once again.

All we want is to return to the point where we were when we bought our home.

The documentation relating to the house will remain accessible for future reference.

What happens if the funds raised exceed the target amount?

If the total amount of donations exceeds the set target, the additional funds will be used to carry out a more comprehensive restoration of the house, to resolve our housing situation, and to ensure that our story and experiences reach as many people and decision-makers as possible, in the hope of bringing about change.

We would like to draw attention to the vulnerable situation a family can find itself in, even if, after many years, it wins a legally binding court case, yet the judgement does not, in practice, provide genuine redress.

This is why we have agreed to the interviews and public statements we have given so far. Being in the public eye is often emotionally draining, but we believe that our story can help others to recognise the dangers sooner, and perhaps contribute to the system providing more effective protection for families who find themselves in similar situations in the future.
