Two years ago, leukaemia took their father from them. Today, the same disease is trying to separate them from their mother. Together, we can ensure their story has a different ending.

Delia is only 44 years old. She is a widow and a single mother of two children.

Today she is intubated and sedated in an intensive care unit in Toronto. Over 8,000 kilometres away, Dan and Mara are waiting for her at home in Romania.

September 2024

On her birthday, Delia noticed that her husband, Radu, had bruises on his legs and arms. She sensed that something was wrong and insisted he go to hospital for a check-up.

From that day on, Radu never left hospital. He was diagnosed with myeloblastic leukaemia, a form of the disease for which there is no treatment. Four weeks later, he passed away. He was 47 years old.

Delia was left alone with Dan, who was 11, and Mara, who was 4.

Two years

Two years during which Delia shouldered everything on her own, without him. Two children, a demanding career, a period of mourning she hadn’t had time to grieve. Without complaining, without stopping.

Two years during which trips to Dan’s football training sessions became her routine. They had once been his.

Two years during which Dan and Mara grew up relying on her. Only on her. Dan finished Year 6 with a grade point average of 10. Mara is starting pre-school in September and can’t wait.

She found solace in helping other women. She volunteered to support women left on their own, like her, lost in the paperwork that follows the death of a husband.

This summer

This summer, she wanted to fulfil one of the dreams that Radu never got to experience: to see Toronto with the children.

They set off two days before Mara turned six.

Mara’s birthday was one of the last days Delia spent with her children.

Shortly afterwards, she began to have difficulty breathing. She went to the nearest hospital, where she was admitted with a diagnosis of pneumonia. Her condition deteriorated rapidly. The doctors discovered that she was suffering from leukaemia. The same illness that, two years ago, took her husband’s life.

She has already started treatment. The first dose of chemotherapy was administered on 1 August. Two more are to follow.

In the meantime, Dan and Mara have returned to Romania on their own, to be looked after by their family. They left without their mum, in the hope that the treatment will bring her back home to be with them.

Together, we can ensure this story continues. And, one day, that it is told by their mother herself.

Why we’re asking for your help

Delia is receiving the care she needs in Toronto. The problem is that she has no health cover there, and the costs are enormous. The travel insurance taken out before they left was only able to cover a very small part of the costs.

Each day of intensive care costs 9,500 Canadian dollars — approximately 30,000 lei. On top of this comes the cost of treatment and, later, medical transport back to Romania.

We have just one goal: to stabilise her enough so that we can bring her home.

The flight ticket is already booked, with an open date. It’s just waiting for her to be well enough to fly safely.

Where the money goes

The funds are managed by Irina, Delia’s sister, who has opened accounts dedicated exclusively to this case. Delia is sedated and cannot manage her own accounts.

Irina pays the hospital in Toronto directly and will organise the medical repatriation. Every payment is documented with an invoice. We will publish, on a regular basis, exactly how much has been raised and how much has been paid. You can enquire at any time.

If the amount raised exceeds the medical costs, the difference will go towards Delia’s recovery and her children.

How much does your donation mean?

One day in intensive care costs approximately 30,000 lei.

600 people each donating 50 lei will cover a full day of intensive care.
