The Nankabirwa Zalikah orphanage is currently in a state of emergency: two of the 40 orphans living there have contracted Ebola and are currently being treated in hospital. Ebola is a severe viral infection that can cause high fever, extreme weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, and internal and external bleeding. The disease is highly contagious and can be fatal despite medical care. For the children affected, this means a fight for their lives, whilst the orphanage faces additional financial challenges.

There are currently 40 children living in the orphanage who would have no chance without outside support. They are entirely dependent on donations. The daily cost of food alone amounts to around 35 US dollars. On some days, the cost of food is already too high, meaning the children have to go to bed hungry.

But it is not just food that the children lack; they also need an education. These 40 orphans have just as much right to a school education as any other child, yet school materials and fees are often beyond the budget. Recently, the orphanage was also scammed on a donation platform, meaning urgently needed donations failed to materialise.

To improve their situation in the long term, a plot of land is now to be purchased on which they can grow their own food. A well is also urgently needed, as the older children currently have to walk for miles every day to fetch water. These journeys in Uganda are arduous, dangerous and rob them of valuable time they need for school and their childhood.

With the donations collected so far, a small shop has been opened to generate additional income. However, this also incurs running costs such as electricity and the purchase of stock.

Every contribution, whether large or small, directly helps to provide these children with safety, education and a future.
