Description
Campaign: “Reborn Roots – Madrid, Ávila and Castellón”
Community of Madrid
The hills of Madrid have suffered recurrent wildfires that have destroyed large areas of Mediterranean woodland. The Sierra Norte and Sierra Oeste ranges have been particularly hard hit, with fires in the summer of 2022 consuming more than 4,000 hectares in Cercedilla and Los Molinos, destroying the habitats of protected species such as the imperial eagle and the black vulture.

Ávila
The province of Ávila has been one of the hardest hit by forest fires in Castile and León. In 2022, the fire in the Sierra de la Paramera and La Serrota ravaged more than 12,000 hectares, making it one of the largest in the province’s history. The reforested pine forests and the forests of centuries-old chestnut trees were reduced to ashes.

León
León has suffered some of the most devastating wildfires in Spain. The fire in the Sierra de la Cabrera in 2022 burnt more than 19,000 hectares, making it the largest in the autonomous community. The regions of El Bierzo and Cabrera Baja lost vast tracts of forest comprising Pyrenean oak, birch and holly, which will take decades to regenerate naturally.
