I’ve never asked anyone for anything; I’m usually the one giving to others, but I’ve been forced to ask for help to pay off the debts in my daughter’s name. I’m a separated mother of two girls. We nearly lost our home, and to get it back, my daughter took on debts that are now being handled by a debt collection agency. She worked as a cleaner in a hotel and as a museum guide, but her salary never exceeded €560 a month; she also worked as a waitress, earning €25 a day for 10 hours’ work. Then I fell ill with cancer and she had to look after me – my despair at losing my hair, my vomiting, my hatred of the wig, the devastating chemo. Meanwhile, she was studying for her degree. My other daughter was a student away from home and came back, losing a year of her studies to be by my side. They supported me, cared for me and encouraged me to continue treatment when I wanted to give up; they acted as my nurses, learning how to give injections, and were by my side every moment. She graduated with honours and we couldn’t be there for the ceremony because I was still undergoing treatment. I had surgery and, thankfully, the cancer is gone – defeated!! I have two breast expanders in place of my breasts, but I’m trying to come to terms with it with the help of the psycho-oncologist. The girls have their own psychologists too; sadly, they’ve been affected by it. Finally, she has more freedom and goes looking for work, which she finds straight away, and a bit of time all to herself. Meanwhile, tax demands arrive here, which I pay in instalments and try to settle without asking her for anything. Unfortunately, it’s not easy for me because I’m unable to work and receive a pension of €330 a month. I have instalments of €420, €90, €55 and €45, some stretching over 72 months. I can prove it all. I’d like to pay off these debts; I’m desperate. Please. I thank, with all my heart, everyone who is willing to help us.
