We are a Ukrainian family with Polish roots. Just before the war, we managed to sell our house in Kherson, and all the money we received was used to buy a home in Poland — with the help of a mortgage.

After the war broke out, our hometown was occupied. My sister, her daughter, and their two cats had to flee Kherson and joined us in Poland. With their arrival, the cost of supporting the entire family increased significantly.

For some time, I lost my job, and the new work I found was unstable, with income too low to cover all our expenses. That’s when the debt began to grow — we were unable to keep up with the mortgage payments and household bills.

Today, we are doing everything we can — everyone who can is working. We are able to cover the current monthly bills, but we cannot repay the debt that built up during that difficult time. Each month is a struggle to keep our home and ensure safety for our family.

My nephew goes to school in Poland, my niece has just graduated from university, and our mother — a retiree — is growing more and more worried about the future. I am deeply afraid that, because of my mistakes, our family could lose everything.
