Description
In recent weeks, several severe storms have hit Portugal, one after another, causing widespread destruction across the country. These storms brought extreme winds, heavy rain and repeated flooding, affecting dozens of municipalities.
The situation has worsened further in recent days. With river levels rising and dams releasing excess water to avoid structural risks, several villages downstream are now submerged, adding a new layer of damage to that caused by previous storms. National reports describe communities without electricity, water or access, and in some regions still struggling a week after the previous impacts.
Many families have lost their homes completely, while others are living in unsafe or partially destroyed buildings.
Across all affected areas, local markets, schools, agricultural operations, and businesses have also suffered extensive losses, and some municipalities remain isolated due to flooding or collapsed infrastructure. The government and civil protection services are still managing emergency responses as more villages continue to be affected.
Tomorrow (7 February), I will travel to the affected regions with my family to provide direct support where it is most urgently needed — just like hundreds of volunteers who are joining forces to help where necessary. At the same time, we will also bring some supplies, although we will try to provide more support in the coming weeks, as far as possible.
I am setting up this fund to collect any contributions from friends who cannot be physically present but still want to help. I will ensure that the total amount is used to purchase:
- Essential food and supplies (mainly water, canned food, pet food)
- Hygiene products
- Building and repair materials
All materials will be delivered directly to families in need or given to trusted local associations that are already coordinating relief efforts.
Any support — whether financial or simply sharing this initiative — means a great deal. The people in these communities are going through an exceptionally difficult time, and every contribution helps them take a step towards restoring their homes, livelihoods, and basic living conditions.
We thank you in advance for your kindness and solidarity.
