Description

His life fell apart in the space of two months.

Until May, Zsolt was an ordinary, working 59-year-old man in Budapest. Then he developed a sore throat. After a sample was taken at Honvéd Hospital, came the shocking diagnosis: a malignant tumour in the tonsillar fossa, with metastases in the lymph nodes.

Brutal treatment began immediately at Uzsoki Hospital: radiotherapy planned at 70 Gy and weekly chemotherapy. The radiotherapy burned his mouth, throat and neck. He suffered from Grade II–III mucositis and skin burns; he couldn’t swallow, had lost his sense of taste, was vomiting and had lost 10 kilos. But he carried on, because he wanted to live.

Just when she was at her weakest, the second blow struck.

On 30 August, his bowel perforated, leading to purulent peritonitis, sepsis and shock. An ambulance was called, and he underwent immediate life-saving surgery. His sigmoid colon was removed in a Hartmann’s procedure, leaving him with a permanent stoma. She didn’t even regain consciousness in the surgical ward; an abscess formed again, and they had to cut open her abdomen once more. Then, four days later, her lungs failed – severe bilateral pneumonia, pleural effusion, intensive care, oxygen, central venous catheter, blood transfusions.

This is where we are now, at the end of September:

Zsolt has survived cancer, two abdominal operations, sepsis and intensive care. He lives with a stoma, his mouth is full of ulcers, he can barely hear, and his hands are numb from the radiotherapy. And worst of all: he has no means of support. Due to his illness, all his income has dried up.

What is the help needed for?

Zsolt isn’t raising money for luxuries. He’s raising money to survive.

  1. Specialised nutritional supplements: Fresubin, Nutridrink, Cachexi – he cannot swallow anything else due to the radiotherapy. 80,000–100,000 Ft per month.
  2. Stoma care products and skin care products – for which the National Health Service only provides partial funding.
  3. Medicines, medical mouthwashes (Caphosol), travel to the Uzsoki Hospital and for check-ups.
  4. For basic living expenses – utilities and accommodation – until she is fit for work again. Because at the moment she is unable to work on her own.

Her medical records prove it: she has all the final reports from the Uzsoki Oncology Centre, the Surgery Department and the Intensive Care Unit. This is not a made-up story. This is reality.

Please don’t just walk away without saying a word.

If you can, please donate – even 1,000 Ft goes towards a day’s worth of nutritional supplements. If you are unable to donate, please share this fundraiser. Every share gives Zsolt another chance to avoid having to give up on his recovery due to financial hardship.

Zsolt doesn’t want to die. He just wants to live. But he can’t do it on his own anymore.

We are deeply grateful for any help you can provide.

Documents: The oncology outpatient record from Uzsoki Hospital (C09H0 dg.), as well as the final reports from the surgical and anaesthesiology departments, are available.
