Description
We have been living through a revolution in Serbia for a full nine months now. Following the tragedy in Novi Sad, which claimed the lives of 16 people (including an unborn baby), university students set off an avalanche of change and, in the manner of Gandhi, launched a struggle against the corrupt and unlawful government and the president. Universities have been under blockade since November, and teachers were the first to stand by them, both in primary and secondary schools and at universities. The majority of teachers returned to teaching immediately and made up for the missed work, thus receiving the deducted amount, which the headteachers had unlawfully calculated according to their own estimates. The bravest and most steadfast, as well as those whose principles would not allow them to back down, remained on strike from January right through to June and did not make up the missed work. Their pay was drastically cut, putting their livelihoods at risk, but with a clear conscience they stood by the university students. As there is no end in sight to the struggle, with daily demonstrations across the country, arrests, an incredible level of lawlessness, violence, repression, stigmatisation, punishments, dismissals, etc., it is impossible to know what the outcome of all this will be. Taking legal action against the universities and the state is very risky at the moment, given the state of the justice system; the limitation period is three years, but we need to survive on something until then. Your help would mean a great deal to everyone who has been left without a salary and would enable us to continue the fight for a democratic system of government, so that we can finally live here normally, without the progressive party and without any corruption! Thank you in advance!
