My name is Nicholas, I’m 31 years old and I’m a transgender man (I’m finally waiting for my ID to be updated). After countless jobs with precarious contracts and wages that were far too low to make ends meet, I registered as a self-employed person about a year ago. In order to work and support my family (I have a wife and a one-year-old child), with rent to pay, living expenses and bills, I need a car (I work in construction, transporting furniture, etc., so I need a vehicle to do my job) because, with great difficulty, three years ago I bought a car ‘cheaply’ (which was a lot for me given my financial situation) from a private seller, only to discover later that the car was badly damaged and the seller had concealed everything, rushing me into the deal or else he would have given it away straight away; the person then disappeared, knowing he had swindled me. Since then, the car has needed too many major repairs and is now breaking down (it often won’t start and I have to get it towed away by the insurance company’s breakdown service); I don’t have the money to repair it, and besides, it’s very old and every mechanic has told me it’s beyond repair now. I can’t get a cheap used car from a dealer because the banks won’t give me a loan, nor will the finance companies, as my wife and I are on our own and have no one to act as a guarantor, and the income from my VAT-registered business isn’t enough for the finance companies, who require certain guarantees. I am therefore asking for help, as I no longer know who to turn to given the situation.
