My husband and I have wanted children very much right from the start. We weren’t able to conceive naturally, and even two courses of hormone therapy didn’t bring the results we’d hoped for. Our fertility specialist advised us to consider egg donation. We had our first attempt in the Czech Republic. I actually got pregnant straight away! I still remember very clearly the visit to the gynaecologist when I saw the little heart beating on the monitor ❤️. I will never forget that image and the feeling that went with it. Then came the shock: at the next appointment, the gynaecologist could no longer detect a heartbeat.

A few days later, I was admitted to hospital with severe pain, a fever and chills. That night, I underwent life-threatening emergency surgery followed by a stay in the intensive care unit. Nevertheless, we did not want to give up on our dream of having a child of our own. Further egg donations followed in the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Spain. We had to cover the costs of the treatments ourselves, including medication, injections, infusions, surgeries and minor procedures. Added to this were the travel costs, which not only stretched our budget but also led to

considerable debt. Worse than the financial strain, however, was the emotional strain for me. The waiting, the fears, the hope and, every time, the disappointment, and constantly having to find new strength, pushed me to my limits and beyond.

We see surrogacy as our last chance to fulfil our dream of having a child of our own.
