Description

Every minute counts: Animal shelters are bursting at the seams and struggling to cope with a surge in injured animals. An emergency appeal can help.

When every minute counts: A new fundraising campaign will pay for emergency surgery for homeless animals

A cat run over by the roadside, a dog with a neglected, bleeding tumour, or a puppy with a complicated fracture after a fall. Scenarios that animal rescuers face day in, day out. Czech shelters and sanctuaries are facing a huge influx of animals in critical condition. Whilst they can provide them with love and a safe haven immediately, they lack the funds for complex surgical procedures. A newly launched fundraising campaign now offers hope for the rescue of dozens of animals.

Veterinary care as a luxury that shelters cannot afford

Shelter operators do everything in their power for abandoned animals. But today’s reality is relentless. The costs of veterinary care, medication and specialist surgical materials have skyrocketed in recent years. When an animal arrives at the shelter following a road accident, the bill for a single operation and subsequent hospitalisation typically runs into tens of thousands of crowns.

“When people who’ve found an animal or the police call us to say there’s an injured animal lying by the road, you don’t think about the money. You load it up and drive to the clinic. But when you then receive an invoice for thirty thousand and know that you have just five hundred left in your transparent account, your stomach lurches,” says one of the volunteers, who has been dedicated to animal rescue for over ten years, describing the harsh reality.

Emergency Fund: A chance at life that can’t wait

That is precisely why this urgent initiative was launched. The aim of the fundraising campaign is not to subsidise day-to-day operations across the board, but to create an emergency fund for acute cases. The money will be used entirely to cover the costs associated with surgical procedures, diagnostics (such as X-rays or MRI scans) and intensive post-operative care.

Thanks to this financial injection, animal shelters will not have to face an unofficial ‘Sophie’s Choice’ – that is, whether they can even afford to operate on a particular animal for financial reasons.

Anyone can help

The organisers of the fundraiser emphasise that no contribution is too small. Even the cost of a single coffee or a cinema ticket can, when added up, mean a pack of painkillers or intravenous therapy for an animal following a serious injury.

What’s more, you don’t have to get involved financially. You can also help the shelters immensely by sharing a link to the fundraiser on your social media, sending it to friends, or telling your colleagues at work about it. Going viral is often what determines the success and speed of raising the necessary funds.

Let’s not let animals suffer because of empty coffers. Together, we can give them a second chance at a life free from pain and spent with loving families.
