Hello. My name is Sakshin de Groot, and I’m the founder of State of Being Sanctuary in the beautiful Algarve, Portugal. Ten years ago, when I turned 50, I dedicated my life to rescuing and rehabilitating abused horses. Currently, we care for six incredible horses on our serene 8-hectare nature reserve.

Our sanctuary is a safe haven, filled with diverse vegetation but, unfortunately, not enough grass to sustain the horses. This means we must purchase hay and specialized food to meet their needs—a monthly cost of approximately €800. These expenses often consume my entire income, leaving little room for other essentials.

My mission is to restore the physical, mental, and emotional health of these horses, giving them the second chance they deserve to live in peace and freedom. To help fund their care, I offer guided walks with the horses, connecting people with these gentle souls. However, bookings have drastically declined over the past year, making it harder to keep up with the costs of their care.
