Description
Living Archive – Preserving Film Heritage for the Future
Who are we?
We are a team of enthusiasts, archivists and film lovers who believe that history must not be left to deteriorate in forgotten metal boxes. Our project was born out of the urgent need to protect rare images, old documentaries and home movies that capture the spirit of a bygone era.
The problem: Time is the enemy of film
Physical film (8mm, 16mm, 35mm) deteriorates irrevocably every day. ‘Acetic acid syndrome’, humidity and dust are destroying collective memories which, once lost, can never be recovered. Without immediate digital intervention, these windows onto the past will close for good.
Our solution: An accessible digital database
We want to buildthe “Living Archive”, a modern digital platform where old films will be:
- Restored:Cleaned and scanned at high resolution (4K).
- Catalogued:Indexed with precise metadata so they can be easily found by researchers, students or the general public.
- Preserved:Safely stored on redundant servers, protecting the original by providing access to the digital copy.
Why do we need your help?
Digitisation is a costly process that requires specialised equipment and thousands of hours of meticulous work. The funds raised through this campaign will go towards:
- The purchase of a professional film scanner.
- The costs of hosting the database for the first 3 years.
- Hiring two digital restoration specialists.
How can you help?
Every donation, no matter how small, represents one minute of film saved.
- 25 RON– Covers the cleaning materials for one roll of film.
- 100 RON– Digitises 10 minutes of forgotten history.
- 500 RON– Contributes to the complete restoration of a short film and adds your name to the list of official supporters in the database.
Your impact
By contributing to this project, you’re not just saving some images; you’re preserving our cultural identity. You’re giving future generations the chance to see the world through their grandparents’ eyes, in vivid colours and fluid motion.

Tips for a successful campaign:
- Visuals:Include a short ‘before and after’ restoration video. The visual difference is the strongest argument.
- Transparency:State on the project website (e.g. Proiecția Association) exactly which films are to be saved.
- Rewards:Offer early access to the database or invitations to screenings of the restored films for donors.
Project Title: The Living Archive – Preserving the Soul of Cinema for the Future
Who We Are
We are a collective of film historians, archivists, and cinephiles dedicated to a single mission: preventing the disappearance of our shared visual history. We believe that old films are not just reels of plastic, but the "biological memory" of our society.
The Crisis: History is Fading Away
Physical film (8mm, 16mm, 35mm) is dying. "Vinegar syndrome," humidity, and physical decay are eating away at rare documentaries, independent films, and priceless historical footage. Every day a reel remains un-digitised is a day we risk losing a piece of our heritage forever. Once these images flake away, they are gone for eternity.
Our Solution: A State-of-the-Art Digital Database
We are building “The Living Archive”, a comprehensive digital ecosystem designed to rescue and share these treasures. Our project focuses on three pillars:
- Professional Restoration:Meticulously cleaning and scanning films at 4K resolution.
- A Searchable Database:A high-end platform where films are tagged with metadata, making them accessible to researchers, students, and filmmakers worldwide.
- Cloud Preservation:Moving fragile history from dusty basements to secure, redundant digital servers.
Why We Need Your Support
High-quality digitisation is a race against time and an expensive technical challenge. Your contributions will go directly towards:
- Specialised Hardware:Purchasing professional-grade film scanners and ultrasonic cleaners.
- Infrastructure:Setting up high-capacity servers and database management software.
- Expert Labour:Funding the thousands of hours required for frame-by-frame digital restoration.
How You Can Help
Every donation saves a frame; every share spreads the word.
- $10 – The Archivist’s Hand:Covers the chemical stabilisation of one film reel.
- $50 – Digital Rebirth:Funds the high-definition scanning of 15 minutes of footage.
- $200 – History Guardian:Fully restores a short film. You will receive a "Digital Guardian" credit in our database and early access to the screening.
The Impact
By supporting this project, you are more than a donor; you are a time traveller. You are ensuring that future generations can witness the world as it was—vibrant, moving, and alive. You are helping us bridge the gap between the analogue past and the digital future.
Join us. Let’s save the past, frame by frame.
